Fault Tolerance (FT) Fault Tolerance (FT) was introduced as a new feature in vSphere to provide something that was missing in VI3: continuous availability for a VM in case of a host failure. HA was introduced in VI3 to protect against host failures, but it caused the VM to be down for a short period of time while it was restarted on another host.
SimpliVity and Nutanix are vendors that offer Hyperconverged (HCI) solutions. HCI consolidates the traditional memory, compute, networking, storage, backup, and disaster recovery into a single node with integrated management tools. For fault tolerance, at least two copies of the hyperconverged storage reside on separate nodes.
When VMware FT is enabled on a virtual machine (called the Primary VM), a copy of the Primary VM (called the Secondary VM) is automatically created on another host, chosen by VMware Distributed By now you know what VMware Fault Tolerance (FT) is -- high availability for any supported vSphere guest OS between two vSphere servers. More specifically, FT is protection from a failed server (unplanned downtime). VMware offers other levels of protection for other levels of failures (server component, storage, data, and site) but FT protects your Working with virtual disk formats and VMware Fault Tolerance. Our expert shares quick tips on VMware vSphere's virtual disk formats, including zeroedthick, thin and eagerzeroedthick. Summary: VMware FT vs VMware HA. Summing up, both configurations significantly increase the Fault Tolerance of a virtual machine, but risks will still be present. There may still be problems with OS setup, network operations, etc.
SimpliVity is by nature of its design, Fault tolerant in the VMware sense. so you have two fault tolerant nodes running the exact same to achieve High Availability. HA = 2 times resources for each HA VM. The service takes a different approach for HPE SimpliVity clones and VMware clones of virtual machines (VMware clones can also be handled by HPE SimpliVity via the VAAI plugin for faster operation). In this scenario, the Resource Balancer Service will leave cloned VM data on the same nodes as the parent because this achieves the best possible cluster-wide storage utilization & de-duplication I would like to confirm Nutanix's ability regarding fault tolerance (FT).
Summary: VMware FT vs VMware HA. Summing up, both configurations significantly increase the Fault Tolerance of a virtual machine, but risks will still be present. There may still be problems with OS setup, network operations, etc. Therefore, you still need to always be prepared for unforeseen problems.

VMware Fault Tolerance differs from the concept of high availability due to its capability in maintaining virtually no disruption to applications in the wake of a failure. A highly available system can prevent downtime, but if a node is lost, there is a delay in restarting its applications on another node in the same cluster.
There is no FT VMs per host maximum, you can use larger numbers if the workload performs well in FT VMs. You can disable checking by setting the value to 0. You cannot invoke Storage vMotion for virtual machines with Fault Tolerance turned on.

The maximum number of fault tolerant VMs allowed on a host in the cluster. The default value is 4. There is no FT VMs per host maximum, you can use larger numbers if the workload performs well in FT VMs. You cannot invoke Storage vMotion for virtual machines with Fault Tolerance turned on. To migrate the storage, you should temporarily turn off Fault Tolerance, and perform the storage vMotion action. When this is complete, you can turn Fault Tolerance back on.
This is one of the VMware technologies designed to protect virtual machines using continuous availability clusters (namely, when a host with the main working copy of the virtual machine fails, the protected virtual machine instantly switches to the “shadow” copy located on another ESX server).

A lot of HCI start-ups have been promising single number support (and hiring a bunch of VCDX's, and GSS staff from VMware and the OEM's to try to pull it off). Fault Tolerance in the cube itself is also very important so any failures have mechanisms whereby they can be tolerated. If the card developed a fault then this would simply mean all I/O is served to or from a surviving OmniCube through its accelerator card and is still deduped/compressed/optimized in real time.

At present, this shouldn’t be a major concern since VMware continues to enjoy major market share. If its operating quality decreases at all, the decrease is proportional to the severity of the failure, as compared to a naively designed system, in which even a small failure can cause total breakdown.
